Don't set out to change the world.
Set out to change your neighborhood, your community.
Every individual has the power to impact their local scene, and that is especially true in a place like Chico, CA.
Look at this website, the CRUX, Pirate Punx, Chikoko, the downtown "Secret Gallery"....each one of these creates a MASSIVE cultural impact on this community. If you removed these few things from Chico, it would dramatically change the social/intellectual landscape.
My point is, there is no need for apathy. Refocus on where you live rather than the world in general. The world is a giant machine made up of thousands of gears all turning into each other to create a monstrous mechanism. The ONLY way to change the mechanism is to swap out a high enough number of the SMALL gears to change the direction of the entire works. Trying to fight the mechanism as a whole will result in defeat again and again.
One gear at a time, one community at a time, one person at a time...
Every one of us has the power to change at least one gear in the mechanism, and to NOT change that gear within our power is criminal...once we realize our own ability to facilitate that change.
Chico is an important gear. It IS changing thanks to efforts by numerous individuals and groups. If enough Chicos also change, the world changes. It's that simple.
